What Is A Domain Name?

Your domain name is your website address, eg. hartdesign.co.nz.

When a domain is purchased it is allocated a set of details, including:

Date Registered: date of initial registration
Date Billed Until: to remain active, your domain will need to be re-registered before this date
Registrar: the company who supplies the domain name
Registrant: the owner of the domain
Admin Contact: typically the owner of the domain, or a representative of the domain owner
Technical Contact: typically the company who registered the domain for you

Just like vehicle registration, to remain active a domain needs to be re-registered over a period of time. This can be done in 12 month blocks.

What Is A UDAI Number?

UDAI stands for Unique Domain Authentication Identifier. This unique code serves as a PIN code for your domain. It is made up of eight case-sensitive letters and numbers, and is allocated to your domain name upon registration.

What Is A UDAI Number Used For?

Its purpose is to provide the Domain Registrant (owner) with control over their domain, and is used to transfer a domain from one Registrar (supplier) to another: a domain cannot be moved to a new Registrar without a valid UDAI. For security reasons, once transferred, the old UDAI will become invalid and a new one will need to be generated for future changes.

How Do I Get My UDAI Number?

A new UDAI can be generated by your domain agent. The UDAI is computer-generated and is always delivered via email directly to the email address listed as that of the Domain Registrant (owner): no one other than the domain owner is privy to this code.

Note: The original UDAI generated upon the initial registration of a domain may no longer be valid, and a new one should be requested from your domain agent.
